How to Dress for an Interview

The dress code in most organizations is as different as the organization itself, so it is impossible to find an outfit that will work well in all interviews. What should you do? Do some investigating and find out how the employees dress and follow their lead but dress just slightly better.

Wear business-like attire, avoiding flashy colours, bold prints, logos and keep jewelry to a minimum. Wear clothes in which you feel comfortable and don’t wear skirts that will ride up when you sit. Carry a nice attaché case or folder to hold your resume and examples of your work.

Before you leave home check yourself in a full length mirror and have one last look for rips, runs in stockings (take an extra pair just in case you get a run along the way) and buttons that are about to fall off. A few extra points:

1. Wear a fashionable suit or dressy tailored separates. Make sure they fit well and don’t remove the jacket during the interview (don’t laugh, I saw this happen).

2. Prepare your clothes for the interview the night before and try it on. Don’t leave anything to chance.

3. If you are not wearing a jacket but choose to wear something more casual long sleeves are a must. Sleeveless garments should not be worn in a work environment and certainly not for an interview.

4. Never go without hosiery and don’t wear sandals.

5. It has been said that you can look at a person’s shoes and determine how wealthy they are – it seems shoes are the last investment. For an interview or business, wear shoes with a closed toe and closed heel and keep them polished without nicked heels or scruffy toes. Read the rest of this entry »

Flapper Style of the Roaring 20′s – Fashion of the Jazz Age

The most popular image of the Roaring 20′s is the Flapper – a flighty party girl, fond of dancing and frivolity. Flapper style was the fashion choice of the young, and despite the iconic image, a relatively short lived phenomena.

In the early part of the 1920′s, hemlines took on a new look. Uneven, scalloped, and handkerchief hems gave the illusion of being shorter than they actually were. The culture and clothing styles took a turn way from tradition, due in part, to World War I.

During World War I, women took on jobs at munitions plants, as drive, and in administrative occupations, filling in for the men who had gone off to war. They wore uniforms, trousers, and gained a new self respect, and moved away from the stereotyped gender roles of the past.

World War I, the Flu Pandemic of 1918 and difficult recovery devastated culture and society. Old rules and traditions fell by the wayside and young people entered into a new philosophy of cynicism mixed with a jubilant devil-may-care attitude. The writer F. Scott Fitzgerald referred to the youth culture as the Lost Generation.

But it was not until the middle o the 1020′s that the Flapper style emerged. Changing cultural attitudes has ushered in a new fashionable silhouette for women. Gone was the restrictive corset of the past, along with the stiff tailoring, tiny waistline, and hour glass figure of the past. Shift dresses downplayed the traditional female figure. The fashion trend of the 1920′s was a tubular look that flattened breasts and narrowed hips. Hair, cut short in bobs, appeared androgynous and almost masculine to the older generation. How to Dress For the Office

Office Lady by day, heroine by night -You’re successful, you earn your own keep and you love your life. It’s almost as if nothing’s going to put you down – except for bad office dressing. Yeah sure, maybe your office is so enclosed you never get to see the sun on workdays, and maybe your boss isn’t a Devil Wears Prada type – so why bother dressing up? The truth is you don’t need to be a globe trekking, champagne sipping fashionista to dress well every day. It’s really all about looking smart and boosting your confidence.

Perhaps it’s a more formal environment you work in – but you don’t need to look like a spiffy accountant with no life. Instead, opt for a pinstriped suit and pair it up with a suit, a skirt or a blouse. If you want to show you’re serious about your job, then think serious colours. Grays, Browns, Blacks and other dark hues will not only translate into professionalism but also a slimmer appearance. If those colours are too dark and sinister for you, then add more colour into your office life with pink or yellow camisoles worn under darker coloured jacket. Give yourself taller confidence with added height from heels, but keep in mind to have them under three inches. Get tips from websites that sell online clothes – many of these websites offer tips that you may be surprised to find. If it’s an outfit that you can wear day and night you’re looking for, then pair a great women’s dress with a fitted sharp jacket during the daytime. By night fall, you’ll be taking off the jacket and relinquishing your nocturnal powers in that fabulous dress, prowling the streets with such confidence that nobody will ever guess you have a stuffy day job a boring office.
